Consistency is key when sleep training, but you can’t put your life on hold when doing it! Car, carrier & stroller naps are really great ways to get a nap in (planned or unplanned), but what to do after can be so confusing!

Here are some helpful tips if your baby falls asleep unexpectedly.

How Long Was the Nap?

If the nap was less than 30 minutes:

  • Try extending the nap to hit 30 minutes

    • Keep driving if you have the time! Or sit in the parking lot at your destination

  • If your baby doesn’t make it to 30 minutes and they are up & ready to party, this time is considered a part of their wake window

    • What to do: add 15-45 minutes to this wake window

If the nap is longer than 30 minutes:

  • That’s considered a solid nap! (It may seem short & it’s not always ideal but it’s totally ok!)

Tips to Manage Naps on the Go

  • If you know you’re going to be out of the house:

    • Plan for 1 solid nap at home

      • It’s ok to make it a little longer than usual to make up for the short nap

    • Do a mini bedtime routine before getting in the car

    • Give yourself extra time in the car to drive around

    • Bring a portable sound machine, cozy blanket, and anything to make your baby comfy!

  • If possible, try to plan appointments/plans around the beginning of your baby’s wake window

  • Always have a carrier and stroller in your car in case the car nap doesn’t go according to plan!

Short naps happen & that’s ok!

Always remember: One bad nap doesn’t make or break the day.
